Behind Every Case is One Person’s Story

MILWAUKEE, April 22, 2025 – A young woman had a long battle with chronic pain following an accident. She ended up homeless and on meth, which spiraled her life to a “useless point.” Her four children were taken from her, and she was at rock bottom.

Trial attorney Jared Powell, founder of Badger Injury Law, took her personal injury case and helped return her to the woman she was prior to the accident.

Powell fights for underdogs, like this woman. He wants to change how people view personal injury law and the people who practice it.

At a time when many personal injury law firms are turning to aggressive billboard buys and fast settlements, Powell is taking a more human approach. “I’m not in this for volume. I’m in it to give people a voice,” he says.

Powell has represented clients from all walks of life, including an Ironman athlete who was T-boned, resulting in spinal injury that left him a quadriplegic, to the woman whom he helped overcome addiction, regain custody of her children and restart her life after a long battle with chronic pain caused by an injury.

“We got her into rehab. We helped her get clean, and when the case settled, she had the resources to rebuild,” he says. “She called a few months ago to tell me her daughter started college.”

These are the types of stories people don’t hear about, said Powell, who sees his role as part lawyer and part advocate.

In the end, “it’s about helping people get their life back without worrying about being laid off or not having to worry about the high costs of physical rehabilitation. “Unfortunately, the human side of the legal system is often misunderstood,” he said. “People who are tragically injured, often are viewed as gold diggers, and it’s simply not the case. We help them get their voice heard and to get their life back to as normal as possible.”

Powell calls for more public dialogue about how civil injury cases work. “People assume it’s one person suing another,” he says. “But it’s really about getting insurance companies to do the right thing.” Insurance companies pay out settlements, both negotiated or jury-determined judgments, and they often are quick to point out “perceived absurdities, such as a hot coffee spill from a fast-food restaurant.  But they rarely want to talk about the way an injury can change someone’s life.”

Powell opened his Milwaukee law office after relocating his young, yet successful career from Las Vegas. “My wife and I love Wisconsin. Ever since being a student in Madison, I fell in love with the state, the people and the culture,” said Powell. “I’ve got my flannel shirts in the closet, and I’m ready for the outdoors.”
